Peggy Amsler Obituary, Death – Peggy Joyce Amsler (Griffeth), a true patriot and trailblazer, peacefully passed away on November 11, 2023, at the age of 92 at the Georgia War Veteran’s Home in Milledgeville, GA. Born on June 19, 1931, to Lola and Lambert Griffeth of Bogart, GA, Peggy’s life was a testament to dedication, service, and love.
Peggy embarked on her journey of service by joining the U.S. Air Force shortly after graduating high school. Following basic training in San Antonio, TX, she was stationed at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana, where she served under the esteemed General Curtis LeMay. Later, she joined the Wisconsin Air National Guard in Milwaukee, inspiring countless women to follow in her footsteps, including one who became one of the unit’s first female KC-135 Stratotanker pilots. Peggy’s military career spanned over three decades, and she achieved the rank of Master Sergeant.
An avid sports enthusiast, Peggy’s love for athletics started in high school, where she played basketball. Her passion extended to the softball field during her time in the Air Force. A devoted fan, she enjoyed watching her favorite teams, the “Dawgs,” and the Green Bay Packers on television.
Upon retiring from the Wisconsin Air National Guard in 1990, Peggy returned to her cherished Georgia, settling in Athens. She is survived by her sons Kenneth and Greg and her sister Betty Lent, sister Eleanor Griffeth, and numerous nieces and nephews. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents Lola and Lambert, brothers Lloyd, D.W. (Bubba), and Doug Griffeth, sisters Dorothy Hester and Jan Lee, and husbands Kenneth Pagel Sr., Walter P. Amsler, and Richard Brennan.
A visitation to celebrate Peggy’s life will be held at Lord and Stevens Funeral Home in Athens, GA, on Friday, November 17, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 12 Noon, followed by internment at Bethabara Baptist Cemetery in Statham, GA. Peggy Joyce Amsler leaves behind a legacy of service, courage, and inspiration that will forever be remembered. May she rest in peace.
