Kip Sumner Obituary, Mourning the Death of a Beloved Math Teacher

Kip Sumner Obituary, Death With great regret, we must tell you the following: Sadly, on October 27, 2023, at the age of 75, our friend and fellow math teacher, Kip Sumner, passed away. Kip has worked for the institution on three separate occasions: between 1996 and 1998, 2004 and 2011, and most recently, 2017 and 2016.

Our hearts go out to Kip’s family and friends. The family has released the following obituary for Kip Sumner, which reads, “Kip Sumner, a respected educator worldwide, passed away peacefully in Manchester on October 27, 2023, at the age of 75. He was born in Louisiana, although he grew up in southern Ontario, Canada. He completed his undergraduate and graduate degrees in mathematics at the University of Waterloo after attending Hillfield Strathallan College in Hamilton. And he’s got a degree in teaching from one of Canada’s most prestigious institutions, Queen’s.

Kip had a passion for teaching and learning, and he dedicated his life to educating young people around the world. He was a teacher for 45 years, all over the world, from Australia to South Africa to Lesotho to Swaziland to the United States to Italy to Canada to Norway to China. He was deeply involved in the United World Colleges (UWC) movement and taught for over 20 years at four distinct UWC sites. Over the course of his 12 years at Upper Canada College, he was instrumental in guiding the institution from an Ontario to an International Baccalaureate curriculum. He served as the Deputy Chief Examiner in Mathematics for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Organisation and as the Executive Director of MathPath, a summer programme for extraordinarily bright math students.

He also oversaw many youth service programs abroad in places including Swaziland, Mexico, the former Yugoslavia, Venezuela, and Poland. Kip liked Manchester United and was a devoted runner with a lot of potential. Kip was an incredibly generous and supportive person. Many people looked up to him and considered him a friend and mentor. He was a loving husband to Xiaohang and a caring father to Philip. His loved ones, students, and coworkers all mourn his passing. There will be a private memorial service in Manchester on November 15th, 2023. The family thanks everyone for their sympathies and support.
